Young guns perform In front of packed out Darwin Crowd

The 2021 edition of Hidden Valleys Dragway’s Nitro up North will go down as one for the history books. With a capacity crowd in attendance and Live TV the Aeoflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars face some very tricky track conditions on a hot Northern Territory night.

Racing on track kicked off with Brandon Gosbell in King Kong facing off against Greg Leahy in the storm trooper with King Kong continuing its hot form going straight into the 5’s at over 400km/h. Next up was Darwin local Nathan Coles driving the famous Nitro Express 57chev went straight down the track to get a win over a tyre shaking LA hooker. The two fords faced off next with the Dark Horse and Lets Boogie mustangs both struggling for traction with the experienced Paul Messineo taking the win over Emma Begley. The Race of the round was next with Justin Walshe in the terminator getting beaten by less than a car length over the tyre smoking Morice Mcmillin in One Bad Kiwi. Josh Leahy in the Bandit rounded at the first round with a solo pass to set fastest time of the round.

Second round things got even tighter with King Kong and the Bandit both taking their respective wins and both less than 100th of a second apart to advance to the final, while wins to the Dark horse and Nitro Express would see them battle it out for the Bronze Rocket Trophy

Round 3 had some juicy match ups beginning with The Terminator taking on the let’s boogie mustang, with terminator going straight down the favoured left-hand lane. Anthony Begley in the LA Hooker had a troubled night but this round used up most of his lane to produce the pass of the night with Low ET of the event a 5.64 at over 400km/h. Then it was trophy time, It was young gun Nathan Coles in Nitro Express taking on the experienced Paul Messineo in the Dark Horse. It was a night for youth with Nathan Coles keeping the iconic black chev stuck in the middle of the groove driving around a sideways Dark horse. Then it was down to the final, from the two from cars of the night. Josh Leahy in the Bandit looking for his second event win, against Brandon Gosbell in King Kong trying to breakthrough for a maiden victory. A very strange and short burnout for Josh had the team from the ACT worried and on the flash of the amber thier worst fears were realised with a broken throttle cable Josh could only watch as Brandon peddled his way to a 6 second pass for the event win. “it wasn’t how we wanted to win it” claimed and excited Gosbell. Josh and I raced back in the junior dragster days so to be in a final against each other in Nitro funny cars is pretty cool, I cant thanks GC and Wendy Cowin enough for this opportunity.
